"Rouge" is not a reddish, attractive cosmetic when you see it on stainless steel. It is very destructive. Just one more reason for specifying thermoplastic pumps."The term 'rouge' is a catch-all word for corrosion products on stainless steel surfaces. Rouge, especially within pharmaceutical water systems of heated aqueous media is tenacious, migrational and can be particularly prolific. It is definitely not protective and is in fact explicitly destructive. Rouge may tend to concentrate within the water medium to the point at which quality control / quality assurance guidelines deem the water unusable. One common location within a water system may be the stainless steel system pump or pumps. Rouging can be first noted on the impeller, then on the backing plate and / or housing. High differential velocities within the pump itself leads to erosive forces and propelling finely dispersed particulates throughout the entire piping system." Source: Robert W.
